Council Gives Legal Team ‘OK’ To Move Forward With Substation Annexation

first_imgShare:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to email this to a friend (Opens in new window) JAMESTOWN – The Jamestown City Council approved a resolution Monday night continuing the legal effort to annex a Board of Public Utilities Substation in the Town of Ellicott.City officials say the proposed annexation would save the Jamestown BPU approximately $173,000 in property tax payments to the Town of Ellicott, Village of Falconer and School District annually.The council voted 7 to 2 in favor of the motion. Councilman Grant Olson and Jeff Russell voted against.Jamestown Mayor Eddie Sundquist says that the municipal bodies in Ellicott did not want to continue negotiations with the city. The mayor encouraged the governments to rethink their decision and come back to the negotiating table.The substation sits on property in the Town of Ellicott and the Village of Falconer on Dow Street between Tiffany Avenue and south of East Second Street.A previous attempt to annex failed after Rochester’s Supreme Court Fourth Department Appellate Division denied the City of Jamestown’s petition to annex.last_img read more

Cattaraugus County Reports 50th COVID-19 Case

first_imgWNY News Now / MGN Stock Image.OLEAN – The Cattaraugus County Health Department reported its 50th confirmed case of COVID-19 on Friday.Officials say the latest case is a female resident who resides in the southwest corner of the county who was in recent contact of another positive COVID-19 case.The resident was given a rapid COVID-19 test on May 6 which was negative. She later developed fever, dry cough, sore throat, and diarrhea, and was tested by the department on May 13. Her test results on May 15 indicated that she was positive for COVID-19.“The department has begun a thorough contact tracing investigation for those individuals that she has been in contact with and the places that she has visited,” explained officials. “We continue to ask our residents to hunker down, and avoid any non-essential travel, especially to areas where there is community wide spread of COVID-19 otherwise, you place your family and other Cattaraugus County residents at risk.” They reiterate that if any resident experiences fever, cough, shortness of breath or whole body aches they should contact their health care provider. President Trump Deems Houses of Worship Essential, Threatens to Override Governors

Myles Cullen / White HouseWASHINGTON – President Donald Trump announced Friday that his administration is issuing guidance deeming places of worship “essential” operations during the coronavirus pandemic, threatening to “override” governors if their states did not follow the new federal recommendations. “Some governors have deemed liquor stores and abortion clinics essential, but have left our churches and houses of worship. It’s not right. So I’m correcting this injustice and calling houses of worship essential,” Trump said during his announcement at the White House.The President said that at his direction, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will provide the guidance.Trump said he was calling upon governors to “allow churches and places of worship to open right now.” “If there’s any question, they’re going to have to call me, but they’re not going to be successful in that call,” Trump added.“The governors need to do the right thing and allow these very important essential places of faith to open right now, this weekend. If they don’t do it, I will override the governors,” he continued. Also joining the cast on that date are Liza Sadovy as Madame Morrible and Philip Childs as Doctor Dillamond, taking over Sue Kelvin and Paul Clarkson respectively. Verkaik, Kelvin and Clarkson will all play their final performances on October 25 at London’s Apollo Victoria Theatre. Speech & Debate Film in the Works; Sarah Steele will Star

first_imgLook out, world: the speech and debate team has reassembled, and this time, they’re taking on the big screen. According to Deadline, a film adaptation of Stephen Karam’s play Speech & Debate is in the works. The Sycamore Pictures production will feature film star Liam James, Austin McKenzie, who starred in the Broadway-bound Deaf West production of Spring Awakening and Sarah Steele, who appeared in the original off-Broadway staging.Dan Harris will direct the project, and Karam will adapt his script for the screen.Speech & Debate follows three high school students (Solomon, Howie and Diwata) who join forces after a sex scandal involving their drama teacher is unearthed. To expose the truth and ensure their voices are heard, the trio revives the school’s scrapped debate club.Karam’s play premiered in 2007 at the Harold and Miriam Steinberg Center for Theatre as the inaugural production of Roundabout’s “Underground” initiative. In addition to Steele, the cast featured Susan Blackwell, Significant Other’s Gideon Glick and Jason Fuchs. The production, directed by Jason Moore, extended its run multiple times.As recently announced, Steele will appear in Karam’s The Humans, another Roundabout off-Broadway production, beginning in September. She made her Broadway debut in The Country House and recently appeared on The Good Wife. James’ film credits include 2012, The Way, Way Back and the USA series Psych.
