GLORIA Jeff, the recently fired head of the Los Angeles Department of Transportation, learned something important in her 18 months in that post: City Hall is terribly afraid of getting sued. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa fired Jeff in late September. The City Charter gives him every right to fire and hire department heads if he doesn’t like the job they are doing. Still, shortly afterward, Jeff hired well-known L.A. lawyer Gloria Allred to fight for her job. Whether she really wants it back or a payout for the road is an honest question. After all, there is precedent for the latter. Former L.A. Animal Services chief Guerdon Stuckey only had to do a little agitating after being dumped from his job to be handed a questionable $50,000 consulting gig. last_img read more
