Dinesh Karthik could be India’s 3rd opener in World Cup: Sunil Gavaskar

first_imgSunil Gavaskar suggested Dinesh Karthik could be India’s third opener in the 2019 World Cup. Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan are the first-choice openers while KL Rahul, who was suspended after the Koffee with Karan controversy, has looked out of sorts for a while now.Virat Kohli, Ambati Rayudu, Kedar Jadhav and MS Dhoni make a formidable middle-order but the return of Hardik Pandya and the presence of Rishabh Pant could put some pressure on Dinesh Karthik with the World Cup only a few months away. Karthik has starred in a few close chases for India and Gavaskar feels he could still be in the reckoning for a World Cup berth. On Wednesday, Dinesh Karthik flopped in India’s chase of 220. Walking in to bat at No.6, Karthik lasted only 6 balls. But Karthik has done the job as a finisher rather well even in recent victories. Against Australia, Karthik scored a brisk 25 not out in a crucial partnership with MS Dhoni and in New Zealand, he scored 38 not out in the third ODI.”I am looking at him [Dinesh Karthik] as the third opener for the World Cup. Look you need to have spare operner. I will look at him as a possible third opener,” Sunil Gavaskar told India Today.”He has opened the batting for India in Test cricket and yes we so far we have only seen him in limited over cricket as a finisher. Particulalrly taking it into account the Nidhahas Trophy final (in Sri Lanka against Bangladesh) which gave India the trohy. ” Gavaskar added.advertisementDinesh Karthik makes up for dropped catch with stunner | WATCH”So yes I think he has the experience and has done well. It was just one bad day in the office for Dinesh Karthik. Basically it was a bad day for all the Indian batsmen. I don’t think it dents India’s chances any way as they have much more to come before the World Cup,” Gavaskar said. Also Read | MS Dhoni part of an unfortunate record as New Zealand hammer India in 1st T20IAlso Read | Ravi Shastri is right, Kuldeep and not Ashwin India’s No.1 away spinner: Harbhajan SinghAlso Read | MS Dhoni or Virat Kohli at No 4 in World Cup?
