The Blues are thought to want to add to their midfield options with both Nemanja Matic and Cesc Fabregas fading in the second half of the season, while Brazilian Ramires has failed to convince. Valencia are thought to want £36m – Gomes’ release clause – for any deal to be concluded, but both Mourinho and Gomes share the same agent, Jorge Mendes, which could prove pivotal in any deal. Did you know?1) Gomes joined Benfica in 2011 and a year after the 18-year-old’s move, he was celebrating a goal scoring debut in a 3-0 away win against Gil Vicente. In January 2014, Benfica sold 100 per cent of Gomes’ economic rights to a private company, Meriton Capital Limited, for €15 million, plus 25 per cent of a future transfer fee.2) He remained with the Eagles until the end of the season, before joining Spanish club Valencia in July 2014 – in December it was confirmed the Portuguese had signed a contract with the Liga side for the next five seasons. His dynamic play between defence and attack are complemented by his passing. The 21-year-old is famed for his passing and ability to run the midfield and he has also won plaudits in Spain for his strength, tactical awareness and defensive responsibility.4) Gomes has been capped three times by Portugal’s national team – making his debut against Albania in September 2014. He has also represented his country from U17 level through to the U21s. There he has scored once in four appearances, with the solitary goal coming in a 6-1 thumping of Poland.
