Credit: CaltechFrances H. Arnold, the Linus Pauling Professor of Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering and Biochemistry, and director of the Donna and Benjamin M. Rosen Bioengineering Center; and Andrew M. Stuart, the Bren Professor of Computing and Mathematical Sciences, have been named fellows of the Royal Society of Great Britain. Founded in 1660, the Royal Society is the oldest scientific academy in continuous existence. Arnold and Stuart are among 62 inductees to the society this year.“While election to the fellowship is a recognition of exceptional individual contributions to the sciences, it is also a network of expertise that can be drawn on to address issues of societal and global significance,” said Venki Ramakrishnan, president of the Royal Society, in a prepared statement. “This year’s fellows and foreign members have helped shape the 21st century through their work at the cutting edge of fields from human genomics to climate science and machine learning.”Arnold is best known for her work on directed evolution, which has been used to create enzymes that make chemicals not found in nature, including molecules containing silicon-carbon or boron-carbon bonds, or bicyclobutanes, which contain energy-packed carbon rings. By using bacteria that make the new enzymes, researchers can potentially make these chemical compounds in “greener” ways that are more economical and produce less toxic waste. She won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2018 for her achievements in this field.Arnold received her undergraduate degree in mechanical and aerospace engineering from Princeton University in 1979 and her graduate degree in chemical engineering from UC Berkeley in 1985. She became a visiting associate at Caltech in 1986 and was named assistant professor in 1987, associate professor in 1992, professor in 1996, Dickinson Professor of Chemical Engineering and Biochemistry in 2000, and Pauling Professor in 2017.Stuart, an applied mathematician, researches the development of frameworks for integrating mathematical models with data. These frameworks have applications in geophysical sciences, such as weather forecasting, with the goal of making predictions more accurate. He received his undergraduate degree in mathematics from the University of Bristol in 1983, and his doctorate in computing from the University of Oxford in 1986. He was named Bren Professor at Caltech in 2016. Oklahoma E coli outbreak grows to 291 cases

first_img The illnesses have been blamed on E coli O111, a much less common strain than O157:H7, the variety usually identified in outbreaks. Oklahoma officials have said they believe the outbreak is the largest one involving O111 ever reported in the United States. Most case-patients had eaten at the Country Cottage restaurant in the northeastern Oklahoma town of Locust Grove between Aug 15 and 17, the OSDH has said. The agency has not identified a specific food source for the outbreak, despite having interviewed more than 1,700 people. Health officials also were investigating a church event that was catered by the Country Cottage restaurant on Aug 16, the OSDH said in the Sep 12 update. At least 30 of 250 people who attended the event at the Bethany Free Will Baptist Church in Broken Arrow, Okla., reported they became ill with diarrhea or other, milder symptoms, the statement said. An OSDH official said last week that because investigators had not identified a specific food source in the outbreak, they suspected that a staff member who handled many foods at the buffet-style restaurant might have been infected and spread the contamination. Sep 15, 2008 (CIDRAP News) – The number of people involved in a restaurant-related outbreak of an uncommon strain of Escherichia coli has risen to 291, including 67 who were hospitalized, Oklahoma officials reported recently. Sixteen of the hospital patients have received kidney dialysis treatment, the Oklahoma State Department of Health (OSDH) reported in its latest official update on Sep 12. One person, a 26-year-old man, has died in the outbreak. The department said it did not plan to interview any more customers of the restaurant after Sep 12. See also: In investigating the church event, the OSDH was joined by the Tulsa Health Department and a team from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the agency said. BIGDADDYKOOL ready for Superstakes test – Nunes

first_imgAnthony ‘Baba’ Nunes’ three year-old colt, BIGDADDYKOOL, announced his arrival on the big stage earlier this year, when he captured the Lotto Classics for the Governor’s Cup in May. A month later the young horse was second in the Jamaican derby after an exciting battle to the wire with FUTURE KING for Jamaica’s most prized race, although both horses ended up being disqualified. However, despite taking on some of the best thoroughbreds on the local circuit, in the Lotto Classics, such as ORPHEUS and JAMAI RAJA, and horses like FUTURE KING in the derby, the three year-old colt will face his toughest test to date when he lines up for the Superstakes, against defending champion FRANFIELD, reigning horse of the year SEEKING MY DREAM, PERFECT NEIGHBOUR, PHINEAS, A THOUSAND STARS, JAMAI RAJA among others, this weekend at Caymanas Park. Veteran trainer, Nunes, is confident the young horse has what it takes to win the $1 million purse on Saturday. “It is the first time he (BIGDADDYKOOL) is going to run against the top A class older horses like SEEKING MY DREAM and PERFECT NEIGHBOUR, and so it’s left to be seen if he can manage them. But I am pretty confident in him, he’s a really nice colt and he certainly stays the trip and he has mature extremely nicely since the St Leger. We have high hopes for him,” Nunes told The Gleaner. Nunes’ biggest concern is that his main contender has not raced in over two months and he thinks this could have an effect on the outcome, but nevertheless remains very optimistic of his chances. “He has trained well, I can’t be happier. I would have preferred if he had gotten a prep race but he had ‘stone’ squeeze about four weeks ago so we ended up missing the Governor Cup, which would have been our prep race. So it has been ten weeks, two and a half months between races. “But he has trained nicely and I thing he can overcome it (A class, older horses). In my mind you are always going to have question marks until the race runs. But ideally I would love to have a race four weeks before but it didn’t happen and that is how it is in horse racing sometimes, things don’t work out the way you plan. But as far as me preparing him for this race with that in mind I have no complaints,” he said. Nunes has won the event on three occasions and would love a fourth, he also wants to give Trinidadian owner Stephen Narinesingh his first Superstakes win. – L.S.last_img read more

MH370: Resolve undented

first_imgThe confidence of the international searches is being tested but the resolve to find MH370, which disappeared over six weeks ago, is not according to officials close to the unprecedented operation.Reinforcing that view the acting Malaysia transport minister Hishammuddin Hussein said Saturday that the search may be restructured but it will not be abandoned.Speaking with AirlineRatings.com one official said that “while confidence was balanced by the number of Bluefin 21 missions the focus remained strong.”And he noted that it took 18 Bluefin 21 missions to finally find Air France Flight 447 and it was located 10km further away from the best estimates..Yesterday the Bluefin 21 was embarked on its 8th mission that is concentrated on a 10km radius around the second Towed Pinger Locator detection which occurred on the 8th of April. It has now covered about 50 per cent of the underwater search zone.No contacts of interest have been found to date, The Joint Agency Coordination Centre said in a statement.JACC said that if the weather holds the current search will be completed in five to seven days.Malaysia’s transport minister said the effort to find the plane was at a “very critical juncture”.“We have pursued every possible lead presented to us at this stage, and with every passing day the search has become more difficult,” Mr Hishammuddin said.He told media that some adjustments to the search may be made, including “widening the scope of the search and using other assets that could be relevant in the search operation”As the painstaking search for MH 370 enters is seventh week there is no loss of interest in the disappearance that has gripped the world. In the US the story still commands the highest ratings as viewers can place themselves in the greatest mystery in commercial aviation. Unlike flying in a third world country in a small 30 year old plane flying Malaysia Airlines on a Boeing 777 from KL to Beijing is something everyone does without a thought for their safety.JACC says that it is happy with how the underwater search is progressing, although plans have changed due to weather and other unforeseen circumstances. On Sunday 11 military planes and 12 ships took part in the search over two areas totalling 48,507 square kilometres.last_img read more

SA’s R9bn jobs fund open for business

first_imgPaul Kibuuka, who heads the DBSA’s development fund, said the fund aimed to create 150 000 jobs over three years, adding that each job funded should last for at least one year. South Africa’s R9-billion Jobs Fund, which aims to help the government create 150 000 jobs over the next three years, is now accepting applications from companies and non-governmental organisations with innovative job-creation projects. Enterprise development includes assistance to local procurement, marketing support, equipment upgrading or enterprise franchising. He said the fund aimed to target between 1 000 and 2 000 projects. These would either be in the form of matching grants, or grants where companies and organisations had committed a portion of funding to the respective project. He said the team had been given directives to process application timeously. The technical team, which processes applications, would meet weekly and the investment team, which makes the final selection, would meet monthly. Local infrastructure development included the funding of light manufacturing zones and communication links to market goods, he said. The fund will run for three years and is administered by the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA). Source: BuaNews Business Trust CEO Brian Whittaker, who has been chosen as the fund’s vice-chair, said the fund was a bold new initiative that would release a degree of creativity on tackling unemployment. 8 June 2011 Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan told a media briefing before his Budget Vote in Parliament in Cape Town this week that the aim was to give out R2-billion in grants this financial year to those in the private sector. Gordhan said the fund would target four areas, namely enterprise development, local infrastructure development, support for work seekers and institutional capacity building. The fund’s investment committee will be chaired by DBSA deputy-chairperson Frans Baleni, who said that investment would target poor and rural regions. The success of the jobs fund depended on strong co-operation between the private sector and the government, he said. Gordhan said his department chose the DBSA to administer the fund because of the development bank’s footprint – which covers over 200 municipalities across the country and its experience in funding community development projects. The National Treasury will continue to monitor and assess the performance and sustainability of projects funded through the initiative and all projects must be run for at least three to five years. Job creation possibilities The closing date for the first round of applications is July 31 and a large portion of applications will be processed electronically. Those interested, as well as applicants, can contact the Jobs Fund on 086 100 3272 or visit www.jobsfund.org.za. “We are expected to submit bi-monthly reports to the shareholder (the National Treasury), so there would be no time to relax,” he said. Support for work seekers would include setting up networks and projects that can provide training and career guidance, while improving institutional capacity would include funding internships and mentorship programmes. ‘A bold new initiative’ Gordhan said the level of urgency around the country’s high level of unemployment meant that the country required a new energy and infusion in the job creation process. The fund is targeted at established companies with a good track record and that plan to expand existing programmes or pilot innovative approaches to employment creation, with a special focus on opportunities for young people. These include the Small Enterprise Development Agency for business support; Khula, the National Empowerment Fund, the South African Micro-Finance Apex Fund and the Industrial Development Corporation for small business funding; and the Technology Innovation Agency for innovation funding. “There’s an opportunity here to do something innovative and that’s what excites me,” he said. He said the fund would not compete with other government initiatives, but rather complement them: “One hopes that this will inspire new forms of innovation, new forms of creativity and open new areas of job creation possibilities,” he said. Financial assistance for small or micro businesses is not covered through this fund, as the government has other programmes to assist entrepreneurs. Four target funding areaslast_img read more

Is There Too Much Free Speech on Facebook? Maybe, Says A Facebook Lobbyist

first_imgA Comprehensive Guide to a Content Audit Tags:#Facebook#NYT#web Related Posts audrey watters The Dos and Don’ts of Brand Awareness Videoscenter_img Facebook is Becoming Less Personal and More Pro… Rumors have been circulating for some time now that Facebook is poised to make its entry into China – one of the few remaining countries in which the social network has no presence. As it stands, Facebook is currently blocked in China. But entry into China isn’t as simple as unblocking access or launching a Chinese-language version. Should Facebook enter China (or “when Facebook enters China,” rather), it is likely it will be required by the Chinese government to censor material and hand over user data. That requirement is something that Google has struggled with, eventually withdrawing from mainland China last year. While Google remains the largest search engine in the world, that status doesn’t extend to China where Baidu dominates. Interestingly, some of the rumors of Facebook’s entry into China involve a partnership with the Web services company.“Make the World More Open and Connected” – Unless Governments ComplainQuestions of censorship remain front and center in these discussions about Facebook’s global reach – both abroad and state-side. Indeed, Facebook’s mission is to “make the world more open and connected,” a stance that – much like Google’s “Don’t be evil” mission – seems to run counter of suppression of free speech. But recent remarks from Facebook suggest that the social networking company is evaluating just how that notion of free speech works – and doesn’t work – in different countries. Facebook is indicating that it may be willing to crack down on content posted to the site, in order to appease governments. “Maybe we will block content in some countries, but not others,” Adam Conner, a Facebook lobbyist, told The Wall Street Journal. “We are occasionally held in uncomfortable positions because now we’re allowing too much, maybe, free speech in countries that haven’t experienced it before.”The WSJ notes that this stance might not go over well with Congressional leaders in Washington D.C., many of whom are displeased that Facebook has sidestepped questions about its plans for China. Furthermore, the WSJ adds, Facebook hasn’t signed on to the Global Network Initiative, an industry group to which both Google and Microsoft belong that lays out ways to protect free speech as Internet technologies expand globally.Facebook and Political ExpressionThis concern over free speech isn’t simply about China, of course. And for its part Facebook has been credited with a key role in many of the recent uprisings in Tunisia and Egypt, giving activists an important tool for unfettered political expression. The site has remained tight-lipped about its thoughts on that role, although the company did respond to hacking incidents that appeared to target Tunisian activists. (See Alexis Madrigal’s account in The Atlantic.) However, Facebook has insisted that the actions it took in that case were about security and not about politics. In China, it will be more difficult to separate these intertwined questions of security, free speech and politics, and as such, the waters may be particularly treacherous for Facebook as it works to balance its push to connect the whole world and to do so under the banner of “open.” Guide to Performing Bulk Email Verificationlast_img read more
