Microbiologist Rita Colwell to receive honorary degree

first_imgNotre Dame will confer seven honorary degrees at this year’s commencement ceremony, the University announced in a press release Thursday. Rita Colwell, a molecular microbiologist, will receive a doctor of science honorary degree. Colwell, whose work focuses on global infectious diseases, water and health will join six previously announced honorary degree recipients.Colwell is a Distinguished University Professor at the University of Maryland and Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health, the release stated.“A highly sought-after counselor on science policy and education matters, she has held advisory positions within government, nonprofit science policy organizations, private foundations and the international scientific research community,” the release stated. “The author or co-author of 17 books and more than 800 scientific publications, she has been awarded 61 honorary degrees.”Tags: Honorary degree, Rita Colwelllast_img read more

Nancy Opel Is Cinderella’s Newest Madame on Broadway

first_img Cinderella Star Files Related Shows There’s a new step-mama in town! Tony nominee Nancy Opel begins performances as Madame in Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella on June 30. She takes over for The Nanny icon Fran Drescher, who played her final performance on June 29. Opel will star as the Broadway meanie through September 7.Opel most recently appeared on Broadway in Memphis. She received a Tony nomination for her performance in Urinetown. Her additional stage credits include The Toxic Avenger, Fiddler on the Roof, Sunday in the Park with George, Anything Goes, Triumph of Love and Evita.In addition to Opel, the cast currently includes Paige Faure as Cinderella, Joe Carroll as Prince Topher, Tony winner Victoria Clark as Marie, Ann Harada as Charlotte, Stephanie Gibson as Gabrielle, Todd Buonopane as Jean-Michel, Peter Bartlett as Sebastian and Phumzile Sojola as Lord Pinkleton.Directed by Mark Brokaw, the production brings to the Broadway stage for the first time the tuner that originally aired as a TV special in 1957, starring Oscar winner Julie Andrews. This Cinderella features a completely re-imagined book by Douglas Carter Beane and additional Rodgers and Hammerstein songs originally composed for other musicals. Trump Organization Cancels Anti-Muslim Group’s Upcoming Mar-a-Lago Event

first_imgThe Trump Organization on announced Sunday that it has canceled a November fundraiser at Mar-a-Lago for ACT for America, an anti-Muslim extremist group that has more than one million members.Amanda Miller, a spokesperson for the Trump Organization, says, “This group absolutely will not be hosting their event at Mar-a-Lago.”She did not immediately provide any additional details, such as who at Mar-a-Lago had approved the November 7 event.News broke earlier during the weekend that ACT was planning to host its annual fundraiser at President Trump’s private club.
